The Mushroom is a 15-meter tall rock formation located about 100 meters northeast of the Puro Island Marine Sanctuary marker. Jan-Peter Boehe and Rolf Dunder "discovered" it during an underwater survey of the Guinbirayan Bay using the camp's* newly-acquired sonar.
The Mushroom sits about 5 meters off a 20-meter wall. Its base sits at 35 meters below the surface. I estimate its diameter at 10 meters.
There are narrow crevices on the Mushroom which I have not had a chance to explore and I still wonder what surprises they might offer. The last time I looked at a dark "hole on the wall" not too far away from the Mushroom, I was greeted by a very shy reef shark.
A "must dive" when in the Guinbirayan Bay area.
How to get there:
The best way to get to the Mushroom or Manunga dive sites is via the Puro Island Ecology Camp. Jimmy, the boatman, will take you to the sites at very affordable rates. You may also take a scenic boatride aboard SV BEEM .... a cute 15-foot vinta. (see Puro Island Ecology Camp)
