How to use our GPS data

Our downloadable waypoints are gathered and compiled in such a manner that it can be useful to trekkers and travellers whether they own GPS receivers or not.

For those who own and use GPS receivers.

Trekkers or travellers who have GPS receivers can download GPS data files (waypoints and track segments) from this website and then upload the data to their receivers and immediately use the waypoints and tracks on a trek or trip.   Following are the steps:

  • First, you will need a waypoints editor software on your PC.  The GPS data on this website is now downloadable in GPX format. This means that most commercial and free waypoints editors will be able to read the downloaded data. If you have a Garmin GPS receiver, it would have been packaged with Mapsource (tm) program and you can use Mapsource to open the downloaded data. If you are a new user and looking for a waypoint editor, you can try the popular GPS Trackmaker which is downloadable from www.gpstm.com or GPS Utility which is downloadable from www.gpsu.co.uk.
  • Select a waypoints file either from our Downloads page or from any of the download links available on the Vicinity Information and Route to Destination pages and download it to your PC.
  • Run your waypoints editor and use it to open the waypoints file that you downloaded.
  • You will now be able to see the data you downloaded neatly plotted bythe waypoint editor.
  • Connect your GPS to your PC using your GPS's PC data cable, turn on your GPS then upload waypoints/tracks/routes to your GPS using the menus of your waypoint editor.  Your GPS receiver will then have the waypoints data stored in its memory and ready to be used on a trip.   NOTE: Before uploading from your computer to the GPS, you should backup any user data you have stored in your GPS as it may be deleted when the new data is transferred.
  • When on a trip, proceed to an "known" point or area on the "map" shown on your waypoints editor. This could be the startpoint of the route to the destination if you downloaded Route to Destination data, or a known waypoint if you downloaded a Vicinity Map data. When you get near the "known" point, turn on your GPS and set it to display the map page. Your GPS receiver should then start showing the waypoints and tracks that you downloaded and your relative position to the waypoints and tracks. All you need to do to be able to go to a destination is to make sure your current position is always on or very near the track points on the GPS display as you travel.

For those who do not have GPS receivers.

Trekkers or travellers who do not have GPS receivers can still find our waypoint files very useful.  You can download the waypoint files and view the GPS tracks on your PC by using an appropriate waypoints editor software.   Here are the steps:

  • You can then view and study the waypoints and tracks and also print it so you can bring it along on your trek.
